Before Your Appointment

How to prepare.

Valid photo ID

A current government-issued photo ID for every signer, such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID.

Every signer, in person

Each person whose signature is being notarized must be present at the appointment.

A complete document

Fill in every blank before we meet. I can’t notarize a document with blank spaces.

Wait to sign

Unless your document’s instructions say otherwise, wait to sign until we’re together.

Know the notarization type

Your document or the person who sent it should tell you which notarization you need. I can’t choose it for you.

My notary record

I record each notarization in my notary record book, as Texas law requires.

What a notary can’t do

A notary verifies identity and witnesses signatures. To protect you, Texas law limits what I can do as a notary. I can’t:

  • Give legal advice or explain what a document means
  • Prepare, draft, or fill out legal documents for you
  • Choose the type of notarization for you
  • Notarize for someone who isn’t present
  • Certify copies of birth, death, or marriage certificates or other public records; request certified copies from the office that issued them

I am not an attorney licensed to practice law in Texas and may not give legal advice or accept fees for legal advice.
